MA3 Class at Carnegie Melon
The nice thing about going to a school in Pittsburgh is that at some Universities you are allowed to take class a semester at another University. I took this opportunity to go to Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and take a class on the MA3 Lighting Console, taught by Todd Brown.
In this class we learn about the MA3 console and had challenges to test our knowledge; one of which was to build a cue list (based on the designs of other students) that could be played along with a song live. My favorite part was being one of the only students to also build the show using SMPTE timecode; I knew I wanted to use timecode in the future, so I wanted to use the opportunity of having a real MA3 console in front of me to build a timecoded show (I talk about this in the video below). The hardest part was probably having to rebuild lighting fixtures using GDTF, which is basically an online forum and workspace for lighting techs to get fixture profiles.
